Christmas on the Beach

Where can you go wrong with Christmas Day spent on the beach? It’s about as Aussie as you can get.

Imagine pitching a beach tent, laying out the over-sized towels, grabbing a cooled bottle of water from the esky and setting up the volley ball net ready for the day.

In your beach bag you might have a frisbee, cricket bat and ball, floatable rugby ball and perhaps even a boogie board or two – there really is no endless list of activities you can get up to on the beach.

If you’re not interested in a packed lunch or leftover ham then perhaps a Christmas barbecue will suit?

There is an endless list of community barbecue spots surrounding Sunshine Coast beaches, all with gas and water facilities.

These are mostly undercover too, so if the weather is less than ideal then these little huts can become the perfect Christmas hideout.

Public toilets are always within walking distance from most Sunshine Coast beaches, as are convenient stores where you can pick up drinks and snacks for the day; if you run out in your esky on the beach.

Games are a great way to spend the day on the beach, and one all-time favourite is to make sand sculptures, which are a lot more challenging than expected, especially if smalls children get involved.

Another fun way to pass the time in the sand is to dig out two holes in the sand about an arms-width apart, and see if you can reach the hand on the other side.

Shell collecting is also fun for the kids, and you can help them sort the shells by shape, colour and texture. You may even find coral and other sea creatures along the shores.

If is a pretty simple game to play and great Christmas present for someone spending time on the beach.

A “jack” or target is thrown on the sand. Players then throw their weighted balls and the one who gets their ball closest to the target wins a point.

The game continues until a certain number of points are reached.

Whatever your plans this Christmas, remember that just because you haven’t planned a getaway yet doesn’t mean you can’t plan some great last minute holiday to Big 4 Forest Glen and the beautiful Sunshine Coast beaches.
